Indoor Tennis Sundays at Cedar Hill Rec Centre

Sunday indoor tennis starts early October and continues through March. Please go to our Members Area and sign up for Indoor play. Choose the list for the time that you would like to play and add your name and contact info. Type the two words from the box below in the space provided and click “Save”. We have two courts for the 11:00 am to 1:00 pm session and three courts for the 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm session. Cost is $12.50 per person per session. To ensure that all members have an opportunity to play, bookings may only be made starting on the Monday before the Sunday you wish to play. If there are too many requests, you should put your name on the spare list, as someone may have to drop out and a late replacement may be needed. So sign up early if you want to assure yourself a place to play. You may also be requested to consider moving to a different session to complete our bookings.

Courtesy Notes: If you have booked in but are unable to play, please find a replacement and notify the Games Director ASAP. Otherwise, three people are left stranded without a fourth. NOTE: No-shows are obliged to pay the $12.50 fee. Please show up at least 10 minutes early to allow ample time to pay the contact person and get ready for your opening set. Please bring the correct change with you.

Format: The draws are made up ahead of time and posted. You play 3 sets of tennis, with and against different partners each time. You are allowed a 10-minute warm-up in the first set. Each subsequent set is 40 minutes long: the changeover times are indicated on the draw sheets. You can play the “first one in” for serve in the first set only. Deuces are played out. Balls are provided.

Outdoors, April through October

The Club has 2 courts reserved from April through October; on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to Noon and on Tuesdays (July to Sept. only) and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Oaklands Park on King Street off Shelbourne Ave. (From March through June, South Island Tennis Association (SITL) League teams play home matches at Oaklands Park on Tuesday nights.)

Outdoor play is informal and drop-in. All matches are doubles, unless fewer than seven people are at the courts. Each match is one set long, first to six in games and “sudden death” deuces, i.e., deuces are not played out. The four people playing then come off the court and four new players go on. Balls are not provided for summer play.

TOURNAMENT PLAY

VTC holds three or four fun, partner-by-draw tournaments throughout the year.

Bill Davison Mix and Match/Fundraiser

Held on a Saturday night each Fall (usually mid-November) at the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, the Bill Davison fundraiser is a change-partners-every-round mix and match to raise funds to support next year’s Bill Davison Memorial Tournament held in August and ultimately for cancer research. Tickets can be purchased at the tournament for use during a match to alter the outcome - buy a third serve, an ace, reverse a line call, replay a point, buy a point, a game or a set. Organizers try to ensure teams of comparable strength compete against each other. No elimination: Everyone plays the same number of rounds and adds up their game scores. A female and male winner are declared at the end of the evening.

Valentine’s

Another tournament is played on the Saturday closest to the Valentine’s Day - the format is determined by the tournament director.

Cliffside Clay Court Challenge (C4)

Give those ailing knees and hips some relief - play on clay! Robert & Judy Mari host this amazing event on their clay court at their home in the Shawnigan Lake area. If you have never played on clay, this is a terrific opportunity to give it a try. It's lots of fun and so great to be able to slide without straining the knees. Other activities available include pool, ping pong, air hockey, hiking/nature walk in the woods, BBQ, hot tub, swimming in the lake 5 minute drive), and to top it all off ...stunning views! There is even live music! If you like to dance, the dance floor awaits your best moves. For the brave of heart, there may also be a tango lesson on offer…

Spring Ice-breaker

Sometimes held, sometimes not, depending on weather and court availability. Rules vary, and everyone has fun. Usually held on a Sunday morning.

Beecher Bay Bash (B3)

We are very happy to announce that Ron Bellamy is once again offering to host this event at his property in East Sooke. It ís a great home and fabulous setting for tennis, games and socializing. Activities on offer include tennis, table tennis, bocce, croquet, badminton, golf, boating, fish and wildlife harassment… there is even a ball machine for anyone who wants to go early and hone their tennis skills!
